Mulching & weeding in the Blue Mountains

Weeds out by hand, edges recut, then a deep layer of mulch. It's the fastest way to make garden beds look finished, and it keeps them that way for longer.

What's included

  • Hand weeding garden beds, paths and gravel
  • Removal of weeds with roots, bulbs and seed heads
  • Bed edges recut
  • Mulch supplied and spread to the right depth
  • Mulch kept clear of stems and house walls

Why mulch matters in the Mountains

  • Holds moisture through hot, windy spring and summer days.
  • Insulates roots against frost in the upper Mountains.
  • Feeds the soil as it breaks down, which helps thin, sandy sandstone soils.
  • Blocks weeds by keeping light off seeds.

Choosing the right mulch

For most beds we recommend a medium-grade organic mulch spread 50 to 75 mm deep. On bushfire-prone properties we keep organic mulch away from the walls of the house and suggest gravel or pebble mulch in the strip closest to the building, because fine organic mulch can catch embers.

Weeds we target

Common Blue Mountains garden weeds include privet seedlings, blackberry, broom, montbretia, onion weed, oxalis, English ivy, and wandering trad in shady, damp spots. We remove roots and bulbs where possible, and bag seed heads so they don't spread into the bush.

Mulching & Weeding: common questions

When is the best time to mulch?

Late spring, after the soil has warmed and been watered, is ideal. Mulching in late autumn also helps protect roots before winter frosts.

How thick should mulch be?

About 50 to 75 mm for most organic mulches. Thicker than that can stop light rain reaching the soil.

Do you supply the mulch?

Yes. We can supply and spread mulch, or spread mulch you've already bought.
